France is such a large country compared to the UK (almost three times the size) it's difficult to know where to start. We love the Atlantic coast around La Sables d' Olonne. If you dock at Le Havre or Cherbourg then around six hours towing using the Peage will see yourself in this region (less if you are solo). This region of the Vendee in the Pays de la Loire, has it's own 'Micro Climate' with as many sun hours as the South of France.

Beaches are pure golden sand and are unspoilt, with prolific naturist areas. Our favorite naturist beach is at La Terrier just 3 miles from La Tranche Sur Mare where we recommend the campsite of La Baie du Aunis right on the beach and just 600 yards from the town center. If it's your first visit to France this is a great place to start, the roads are good and not very crowded.  To reach the Vendee we use LD lines from Portsmouth to Le Havre their charges are a fraction of Brittany ferries.

If you are feeling more adventurous then the south of France may appeal (see our feature on Terre De Soleil). Again fantastic beaches and plenty of campsites both naturist and textile. towing will take about a day and a half but you can stop overnight free at many of the service areas en-route all have restaurants/cafes for food and are much more secure than the un-serviced Aires.

If you own a motorhome there are many 'Free' stops on the coast with water and waste disposal, some even have free electricity.
Warning fixed and mobile speed cameras are increasing and the police can and will fine you on the spot cash only is accepted!!!! Driving on the right is not a problem and roundabouts are easy as long as you slow down before entering the traffic flow. By law you must have headlamp beam deflectors, a warning triangle and a spare set of auto bulbs.
